I chose to take these pictures they looked abstract to me so I took the pictures at different angles to try and make people think about what it could be.
First I looked around my home for anything that I thought looked abstract to give me some idea of what kinds of photos I wanted to take I also looked at some abstract images online to give me more of an idea.
Focus
Light: Line: Repetition: Shape: Space: Texture: Value/Tone: |
Which areas appear clearest or sharpest in the photograph? Which do not?
Which areas of the photograph are brightest? Are there any shadows? Does the photograph allow you to guess the time of day? Is the light natural or artificial? Harsh or soft? Reflected or direct? Are there objects in the photograph that act as lines? Are they straight, curvy, thin, thick? Do the lines create direction in the photograph? Do they outline? Do the lines show movement or energy? Are there any objects, shapes or lines which repeat and create a pattern? Do you see geometric (straight edged) or organic (curvy) shapes? Which are they? Is there depth to the photograph or does it seem shallow? What creates this appearance? Are there important negative (empty) spaces in addition to positive (solid) spaces? Is there depth created by spatial illusions i.e. perspective? If you could touch the surface of the photograph how would it feel? How do the objects in the picture look like they would feel? Is there a range of tones from dark to light? Where is the darkest value? Where is the lightest? |
WWW: I took pictures that looked abstract to me and looked interesting
EBI: It would be even better if i used a different variety of places to find abstraction instead of it being the same places.

I picked this images because it had detail and looked very intriguing to be I like how you can see the texture and detail its different because you cant tell what it is to me I thought it looked like a leaf before then it looked like a tree stump but then I thought since its blue at the top and white at the bottom something could be reflecting off something else.
Same with this one I really like this how you can see the detail and texture and how little pieces of dust so it seems like its old. with this one as well you can kinda tell what it is, it seems to be like a ball of yarn but Im thinking it could be something else

Photograms
Photograms are pictures taken without a camera so you can place items on photographic paper making sure its in red light so its not exposed and turns yellow when your items are placed to your liking then you will turn the red light over to like a normal light so its exposed then leave for about 8 to 10 seconds then remove the items in the solution which are Developer, Stop and fix then just place in water to clean them
then just squeegee the photogram then you would just hang them with the clothes pegs.
Homework.
The first thing that I done was gather materials for the photogram once I got my materials I went in the dark room then I went to a bench I laid all my materials out on the shiny side of the paper and wrote my name on the matte side of the paper then I exposed it to the light. Once I done that I took it to the developer when I let it sit for about a 1 min then took it to the fix and the fix just helps the developer settle in better then I used the tongs to put the photogram and put it in the stop and what the stop does is it stops the whole developing process and you can leave that in there as long as you would like then once you have done that then u can just leave it in the water to wash off any remaining chemicals, the last thing to do is squeegee the photogram then hang it up.

Ralph Eugene Meatyard
I like these pictures as in some of them you cant tell what they are so it seems mysterious use of multiple exposure seems to give it a spooky effect.
Alfred Stieglitz
I also find these types of pictures interesting because the cloud are in different arrangements each times so I think these would be easy to recreate as it seems so simple but seems so interesting.
These are the pictures that I took outside I tried to get it pretty accurate to ralph's images it was very hard to get it exact but I thing I done pretty good. I tried to get them quite close so they were slightly blurred.
Ralph Eugene Meatyard Analysis.
The first thing I noticed about this is how its out of focus which gives a mysterious vision also because its in black and white, it gives more of a texture of the image. Ralph uses motion blur to create a shaky image that looks like its vibrating, Ralph also uses trees and twigs as his inspiration the words I would use to describe this image would be "dull", "mysterious" and "harrowing" because its so dark if I needed to describe this image to someone who couldn't see it, would be this picture was taken with motion blur to create a vibrating effect, this image I think is naturalistic because its a tree in nature. The things that I recognise in this image it looks like there is a hill or something like that. What seems new to me is how he uses the motion blur to create a vision of vibration.
This Photo reminds me of natures and being outside, the shapes of the picture is the tree the lines are quite jagged as well due to the motion blur.
The photographer has captured the light in this image at the top of the image it seems brighter then the rest, This picture I don't feel like its any different from real life except for the motion blur, this art work interest me as it seems quite mysterious and creepy it might of been taken on a hill by a waterfall or somewhere in a forest.
Space is represented in this picture as crowded as the image is mostly the tree, The part of the photography I find most interesting is the background and the tree as the background you can tell what it is and the tree because i like how it looks like the silhouette. The title i would give this image would be "Mystic trees" because its quite mysterious as its dark.
I think this photography is about trees and motion blur. I came up with this idea because it has trees and seems really interesting because of the background because it looks like theres like a waterfall but its hard to tell.
I think that this picture is is effected because it gives us an idea of motion blur i think that other people would say that its different because of the motion blur because its not that common with basic photography. this photography is worth remembering that the motion blur is a really good effect for a "Vibrating" images.
I have learnt a lot from exploring this work of art because i've got more information from writing about this piece of work.

How to take a picture like Uta Barth
1) First of all you would decide what
kind of image you would want to take find something that inspires you and try and recreate it. 3) Third you would need to use the camera lens out of focus
because most of her image are like this so when using a room with pale lighting and an out of focused camera you would be able to create and amazing image. |
2) Second of all try and find one of Uta Barths pictures
to recreate she usually uses pale soft lighting to create her images. 4) You can also use different filters or camera angles to create the perfect image.

Saul Leister
Saul Leister to me takes photos that are quite close up so its not very clear on the what the picture is or what its about but the way he takes the images is by zooming in and focusing on one part of the images for example the middle or side, its also like he's ''Spying'' on people by taking pictures of them without them knowing heres and example of this.
Leister's photos are usually quite blurry, and because its blurry its still a little difficult to tell what the image is.
My First at home attempt at Saul Leiter.
Saul Leiter research
Saul Leiter was born in pittsburgh, he was an american photographer and painter. His work is in the collections of many prestigious public and private collections.
Saul Leiter mother gave him his first camera at 12, At age 23 he left theology school and moved to new York to become an artist.
He began associating other contemporary photographers such as Robert Frank and Diane Arbus.
The camera provided an alternative way of seeing and framing events and interpreting reality.
He died on 26th of November 2013 in new York city.

This is the picture I choose that Saul Leiter took, which is a little different to what your maybe used to seeing but I like how something is reflecting onto the water it gives it a wavy look so I like how it basically transitions from straight to wavy looking. In the background you see a pile of mud with a lot of rubbish in, So it kind of gives an idea of what that particular area is like their might not be that many people going along that road, but if they do they just throw all of their rubbish about because it wouldn't be a well looked after area, Because the people who do walk through probably just throw what they have in their hand if it is like a food packet or drink bottle.
Here are some of the pictures i took at home looking though the glass
Here are the pictures that I took in school and I used some cut outs from a piece of paper to have some of the image blocked and the background in focus.
These are the pictures I took I tried to inspire them off of Saul leiter By it being close up and the background of focus I love this kind of effect its shows details within the image.
Here are some more of my inspired images with this set i tried to go for colors and focus of the different kinda of saul leiters images.
Friday 11 march 2016 we went on a trip to the photographers gallery to see some of Saul Leiters pictures and we had a chance to take our own ones that were inspired by Saul Leiter and the color wheel.
Saul Leiter's Pictures.
I chose this quote because he's saying he'd rather photograph rain on a window instead of a famous person which suggest that he's not really bothered about other people and what they do with their daily lives and that rain is probably more interesting than some people so it also shows he's committed to his photography work.
Evaluation
I have enjoyed doing abstraction its been really good to learn the different angles you can take pictures, with I am quite proud of how my final piece turned out on the trip I took a lot pictures of buildings because they have sharp edges, Most of my abstraction images are inspired by Saul Leiter as most of his pictures and paintings are mainly focused on abstraction, Some of the pictures i took on the trip I think I could of done better because some of the pictures didn't really come out how I expected them too so that was a bit disappointing but overall I am very happy with my abstraction page and how it turned out also how my final piece turned out. I tried to go for a theme for my final piece with using only images I took on the trip but I thought i might add at least one piece of a more saul Leiter inspired image with the raindrops on the window.
